I had been meaning to write a post about Lille for really long as I happen to be there quoite often. And, as it usually happens (at least that’s my case), it took me a while to finally do it. But here it is: an article about the capital of fourth-largest urban area in France, a city full of history and great architecture and a former European Capital of Culture – yet probably you have heard very little about it. Welcome to Lille, a hidden gem between Paris and Brussels.
Lille is right between Paris and Brussels and you can reach it from both cities in one hour by TGV train or 2 hours by car. You can also get there from London and by Eurostar train – under the English Channel – it will take less than 1,5 hour. Maybe it’s the proximity of these three capitals and popular tourist destinations that put Lille in the shade.
But Lille is definitely a place to visit. It’s the capital of Hauts-de-France region (before it used to be the capital of Nord-Pas-de-Calais region) and it’s an interesting blend of French and Flamish culture. It used to be an important industrial centre and now it’s becoming a cultural hub. It’s quite compact and you can easily visit it over a weekend or even in one day.
Most main sights are in the city centre and can be reached easily by foot. Amongst the places you should see in Lille is Place du Général de Gaulle and its main building: Vieille Bourse. This is the former building of the Lille Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It was built in the middle of the 17th century when Lille was a Spanish city and then it was restored first in the 19th century and then at the end of the 20th century. The Vieille Bourse is made up of 24 little houses around an arched courtyard. Make sure you see the courtyard too: today, a second-hand book market as well as chess players can be seen inside. In the summer there are tango classes and shows threre.
Place aux Oignons is another must visit place in Lille. It’s located right in the heart of one of its oldest districts and its origins date back to Middle Ages. Despite its name (oignons mean onions in French), it has nothing to do with onions. In this place there used to be a donjon built by the counts of Flanders and its name derives from the Latin words for donjon – dominium – later evoluated to dominion and then, especially in the spoken language, shortened into oignons. Later, Place aux Oignons used to be one of the poorest areas in Lille but today it’s known as a beautiful and vivid square with plenty of cafes and restaurants either directly on the square or in its surroundings.
Donżon to po łacinie dominium, później słowo to ewaluowało do dominion, a następnie zostało skrócone – głównie w języku mówionym – do oignons.
And when you get to Place aux Oignons, make sure you stroll in the area as this district is one of the most beautiful in Lille. Architecture lovers will for sure notice that many Flamish features can be found in the buildings there.
In Lille you can also visit an extraordinary cafe (most likely the only such place in Europe): dog cafe Le Waf. Some of the rescue dogs present in the cafe have already been adopted and the others are still looking for permanent homes. When you enter the cafe, each of the dogs is presented to you, and then you can feed them and play with them. You can also have a cup of coffee and grab something to eat but let’s be honest: that’s a secondary thing. here’s lots of barking, petting and fun. Great initiative and cool place!
Super inicjatywa i wspaniałe miejsce!
A cup of coffee at Le Waf isn’t the only thing you should taste in Lille! You can also have there typical Flamish delicacies such as gaufres liégeoises (I know, the name suggests it’s from Liège but actually it’s a typical dessert of all the region of Flanders), le Welsh (a gratin made of a slice of bread and ham in a batter of cheddar, beer and mustard) and in the summer try local wheat beer served with a slice of lime – very refreshing!
Lille is also a perfect Christmas destination. The city centre becomes one huge Christmas market and is beautifully colorated.
