Amazing Laos: Bolaven Plateau

Bolaven Plateau is the least touristy and the most authentic place I have seen during my trip to Asia. The nature there is unspoiled, people friendly, coffee fresh and tasty… Sounds like paradise? Have a look at my article and photos taken in the idyllic Bolaven Plateau 🙂

Bolaven Plateau to najmiej turystyczne i zarazem najbardziej autentyczne miejsce, do którego miałam okazję dotrzeć podczas podróży do Azji. Natura tam jest nieskażona, ludzie przyjaźni, a kawa świeża i pyszna… Brzmi jak raj? Przeczytajcie, co napisałam o sielankowym Bolaven Plateau 🙂

During my first days in Laos I stayed in Pakse, in the Southern part of the country. The town isn’t the most interesting place in Asia but it is the gateway to many beautiful spots. It’s very close to Bolaven Plateau, a truly amazing region. Close to the Thai, Cambodian and Vietnamese borders, with an altitude of 1,000 to 1,300 meters, the area has a relatively cool climate and high rainfall.

The place isn’t very touristy (yet?) but there are few companies and hotels organising trips there. The other option is renting a motorbike (which is a very popular mean of transport in South-East Asia) and exploring the region on your own.

What is so special about Bolaven Plateau and what you should see there when visiting Laos?

Pierwsze dni w Laosie spędziłam w Pakse na południu kraju. Miasto to samo w sobie nie ma wiele do zaoferowania, ale jest bramą do wielu pięknych miejsc. Leży ono niedaleko cudownego regionu Bolaven Plateau. Rejon ten rozciąga się nieopodal granic z Tajlandią, Kambodżą i Wietnamem, na wysokości 1000-1300 mnpm i jest znany z raczej chłodnego klimatu i obfitych opadów.

Miejsce to nie jest (jeszcze?) turystyczne, ale w Pakse można znaleźć kilka firm bądź hoteli, które organizują wyprawy do Bolaven Plateau. Alternatywą może być wypożyczenie motoru (który jest bardzo popularnym środkiem transportu w południowo-wschodniej Azji) i samodzielne odkrywanie okolicy.

Co jest zatem tak szczególne w Bolaven Plateau i co koniecznie trzeba zobaczyć będąc tam?

Tad Fane twin falls thunder over 100 metres down the steep cliffs into a gorge which makes them one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Laos. The surroundings are amazing too: the scenic rainforest spot is part of a big national park where many wild animals live. The place is very quiet, you can hear the water falling down and birds singing.

Bliźniacze wodospady Tad Fane liczą ponad 100 m wysokości i spadają wzdłuż klifów do rzecznej gardzieli, co czyni je jednymi z najbardziej spektakularnych w Laosie. Okolice wodospadów są równie wspaniałe: to miejsce w lesie deszczowym jest częścią wielkiego parku narodowego, w którym żyje wiele dzikich zwierząt. Przy Tad Fane najbardziej zachwyciła mnie kompletna cisza – jedyne co słychać to odgłosy spadającej wody i śpiew ptaków.

Bolaven Plateau is also famous for its high grade coffee. The French started planting it in the early 20th century as a way of making this corner of their empire profitable. Today, despite the ravages of war and economic deprivation throughout Laos, the Bolaven landscape is still covered with plantations. You can visit many of the Lao organic coffee farms, see how the coffee plantation looks like and, of course, enjoy a cup of fresh brew. I must admit that the coffee plantations areas look really great and is one of the most beautiful landscapes you can see in the Southern Laos.

Bolaven Plateau słynie także z najwyższej jakości kawy. Francuzi zaczęli uprawiać ją na początku XX w. jako sposób na czerpanie dochodów z tej części imperium. Dzisiaj, pomimo wojen i problemów ekonomicznych, które nawiedziły Laos, krajobraz Bolaven Plateau wciąż jest pełen kawowych plantacji. Można odwiedzić wiele z nich, zobaczyć jak wygląda plantacja od środka oraz, oczywiście, spróbować świeżo przygotowanego trunku. Muszę przyznać, że okolice kawowych plantacji wyglądają niesamowicie i moim zdaniem są jednymi z piękniejszych krajobrazów, które można podziwiać na południu Laosu.

As the area is rural and unspoiled, Bolaven Plateau is also home to a number of Lao ethnic villages. Amongst different tribes there is the Alak tribe which is known for an interesting tradition: its members build their own coffin while alive. The coffin is then placed somewhere in the village until the moment the person dies – then their relatives put them in that coffin.

Bolaven ethnic villages are also extremely picturesque: the colours, buildings and – most importantly – people make it a unique place.

Jako że Bolaven Plateau to region ruralny i wciąż nieskażony, jest w nim wiele etnicznych laotańskich wiosek. Pośród różnych plemion, które tam żyją jest też plemię Alak słynące z osobliwej tradycji: jego członkowie za życia budują sobie trumnę. Gotowa trumna leży później gdzieś w wiosce do momentu śmierci – wtedy bliscy kładą zmarłego do zbudowanej przez niego trumny.

Etniczne wioski w Bolaven są też wyjątkowo malownicze: ich kolory, zabudowa oraz – przede wszystkim – ludzie czynią je wyjątkowymi miejscami.

Tad Lo is a village with three waterfalls: Tad Suong, Tad Lo and Tad Hang. Most of the local community is built up around this area. It’s a perfect place to relax as the atmosphere is full of serenity. In Tad Lo you can swim, fish or enjoy a meal in one of the village’s bars.

Tad Lo to wioska zbudowana wokół trzech wodospadów: Tad Suong, Tad Lo oraz Tad Hang. To idealne miejsce na relaks, a atmosfera jest wyjątkowo spokojna. W Tad Lo można popływać, łowić ryby oraz zjeść coś w jednym z tutejszych barów.

Lan Xang was the name of the Leo Empire between 1354 and 1707. It can be translated as “The kingdom of a Million Elephants”. I didn’t see a million, have managed to see two of them though 🙂

Imperium Laotańskie w latach 1354-1707 nazywało się Lan Xang, co można przetłumaczyć jako “Królestwo Miliona Słoni”. Cóż, nie widziałam miliona, udało mi się zobaczyć przynajmniej dwa 🙂

The last stop of my Bolaven Plateau trip was one more waterfall: Phaxuam Cliff. Surprisingly the most crowded place in the whole Bolaven – full of Thai students on a school trip. The waterfall isn’t as impressive as Tad Fane but the whole area is very scenic. After the stop at Phaxuam Cliff I headed back to Pakse which the next day was the gateway to another beautiful place. Ostatnim przystankiem objazdu po Bolaven Plateau był jeszcze jeden wodospad: klif Phaxuam. O dziwo było to najbardziej zatłoczone miejsce w całym Bolaven – było tam mnóstwo tajskich uczniów, którzy przyjechali tam w ramach szkolnej wycieczki. Sam wodospad na pewno nie robi wielkiego wrażenia jak Tad Fane, ale jego okolice są wyjątkowo malownicze. Po przystanku przy Klifie Phaxuam udałam się z powrotem do Pakse, które następnego dnia było bramą do kolejnego przepięknego miejsca. Kolejny post już niebawem, nie przegapcie 🙂

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls has always been on my bucket list so when planning my trip to Canada I had no doubts I had to see these famous waterfalls. I had great expectations and maybe that’s why I was disappointed when I finally got there. Or maybe that’s because I got used to seeing many wonderful waterfalls in Iceland.

Wodospady Niagary od zawsze były na liście miejsc, które chciałam zobaczyć. Planując wyjazd do Kanady koniecznie chciałam tam pojechać i w końcu spełnić to marzenie. Spodziewałam się czegoś naprawdę niesamowitego i pewnie dlatego wodospady mnie zawiodły. A może to wina wielu wspaniałych wodospadów, które widywałam na co dzień na Islandii.

The waterfalls themselves are impressive, you can get quite close and see how quickly the water flows. There are all sorts of things you can do to see the waterfalls even better: Niagara Falls boat tours, helicopter rides and many restaurants and bars with great view of the whole place.

Same wodospady robią spore wrażenie, można podejść dość blisko i zobaczyć zawrotną szybkość, z jaką woda płynie w rzece Niagara. Poza tym można podpłynąć statkiem, przelecieć helikopterem nad rzeką oraz pójść do restauracji czy baru z widokiem na wodospady – wszystko to po to, by móc je zobaczyć jak najlepiej, z jak najmniejszej odległości.

It all would be really nice if it wasn’t so touristy: there were so many people there (and I was there at the end of September, no idea what happens there during the summer!) and all kinds of attractions for them: casino, theme parks, hundreds of bars, pubs, restaurants and hotels. To me it was way too much and it ruined the beauty of the place.
When thinking about beautiful waterfalls to see, I see wonderful places in Iceland: the enormous Dynjandi, the fairytale Hraunfossar or the mighty Dettifoss. Niagara Falls won’t come to my mind because in comparison to everything that’s around them they seem so small even if in fact they’re great and mighty.

Całe miejsce byłoby całkiem urokliwe, gdyby nie było tak bardzo turystyczne: przy Niagarze było mnóstwo osób (a przecież byłam tam pod koniec września, strach pomyśleć co dzieje się tam w lecie!) i jeszcze więcej przeróżnych atrakcji: kasyno, parki rozrywki, setki barów, pubów, restauracji i hoteli. Myślę, że było tego zdecydowanie za dużo w jednym miejscu.
Na hasło “przepiękne wodospady” przychodzą mi na myśl wspaniałe miejsca na Islandii: przeogromny Dynjandi, bajkowy Hraunfossar czy potężny Dettifoss. Nie pomyślę o Wodospadach Niagary, bo w porównaniu do tego, co znajduje się w okolicy one same wydają się małe – mimo że tak naprawdę też są olbrzymie i potężne.

Hraunfossar, Barnafoss and Hvalfjörður

The last day of the Ring Road trip was unexpectedly full of beautiful places. Even very close to Reykjavik you can find amazing spots that look like out of this planet.

One of the highlights of the day were waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Hraunfossar is a series of numerous springs coming out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under Langjökull (the second largest ice cap in Iceland). The name “hraun” actually comes from the Icelandic word for “lava”. Hraunfossar is one of my favourite waterfalls in Iceland, on a sunny day the view is amazing.
Also, just a stone’s throw from Hraunfossar there is another waterfall: Barnafoss. It is a few paces further along the walkway along the Hvita River in the upstream direction. There is an interesting story regarding the name of this waterfall:

“The meaning of this waterfall translates into “Children’s waterfall”, but the signs here indicated that there was a saga describing why it got this name. The saga said that there were two children in the Hraunsás household who were supposed to stay home while the parents went to church for Christmas Mass. When the parents returned from mass, they discovered that the children had disappeared (possibly because the children got bored and decided to go out).
They then followed the children’s tracks to this waterfall at the stone natural bridge where the tracks disappeared. The mother concluded that the children must have fallen into the river and drowned. Then, the mother had the arch destroyed in order to ensure no one else faces a similar fate.
I’ve seen some accounts say it was by spell or curse, which induced the bridge’s collapse by earthquake. In reality, natural bridges usually collapse over time, and given the powerful erosive forces from the rapidly moving river that undercut whatever was supporting the bridge, that could very well have been the fate of the natural arch here.”

After a lovely time by the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls I headed to Hvalfjörður, a fjord nearby Reykjavik. In Icelandic Hvalfjörður means Whale Fjord – some time ago a large number of whales could be found and caught there. Now whales seem to have disappeared from the fjord, but it’s still worth going there because this is a very picturesque area.

Ostatni dzień podróży dookoła Islandii był – dość niespodziewanie – przepełniony wizytami w pięknych miejscach. Okazuje się, że nawet niedaleko Reykjaviku są miejsca nie z tej ziemi.

Jednymi z głównych atrakcji dnia były wodospady Hraunfossar i Barnafossar. Hraunfossar to szereg strużek wychodzących z Hallmundarhraun – pola lawy powstałego po erupcji jednego z wulkanów znajdujących się pod Langjökull (drugim co do wielkości lodowcem Islandii). Nazwa Hraunfossar pochodzi właśnie od islandzkiego słowa “hraun”, które oznacza lawę. Ten wodospad jest jednym z moich ulubionych na Islandii, podczas słonecznych dni wygląda naprawdę wspaniale.
A nieco dalej, w górnej części rzeki znajduje się kolejny wodospad: Barnafoss. Z jego nazwą związana jest ciekawa historia:

“Barnafoss można przetłumaczyć jako “Wodospad Dzieci”. Wyjaśnienie tej nazwy można znaleźć w jednej z sag: mówi ona o dwojgu dzieci z gospodarstwa Hraunsás, które miały pozostać w domu podczas gdy ich rodzice poszli do kościoła na pasterkę. Gdy wrócili oni ze mszy, nie mogli znaleźć dzieci – prawdopodobnie nudziły się i zdecydowały się wyjść na zewnątrz.
Idąc po śladach maluchów doszli do wodospadu i naturalnego kamiennego mostu, na którym ślady się urwały. Matka wywnioskowała, że dzieci wpadły do wody i utopiły się, postanowiła więc zniszczyć most, by nikogo innego nie spotkał podobny los.
Inne głosy mówią, że most został zniszczony wskutek zaklęcia czy klątwy, która spowodowała trzęsienie ziemi. W rzeczywistości jednak naturalne kamienne mosty zazwyczaj zapadają się z upływem czasu. Biorąc pod uwagę silną erozję, szybko przepływająca woda najprawdopodobniej zniszczyła to, na czym oparty był most.”

Po uroczej wyprawie do wodospadów Hraunfossar i Barnafoss udałam się do Hvalfjörður, fiordu nieopodal Reykjaviku. Po islandzku Hvalfjörður oznacza Fiord Wielorybów – wcześniej w tym miejscu można było znaleźć i złapać wiele wielorybów. Teraz wygląda na to, że opuściły one Hvalfjörður. Mimo to wciąż warto zapuścić się w tym kierunku, bo jest to przepiękny fiord.

Waterfalls of the North

The landscape in the North of Iceland is considerably different to the South. In the North East there are almost no plants, but there are large lava fields and picturesque hills carved out by rivers. There are also numerous waterfalls: both small ones hiden somewhere between the mountains or impressive ones such as Dettifoss the most powerful waterfall in Europe.

Krajobraz północnej Islandii znacznie różni się od południa kraju. Na północnym wschodzie jedzie się przez pustkowia prawie bez żadnej roślinności, są natomiast olbrzymie pola lawy oraz malownicze wzgórza i rzeki. Jest tu też mnóstwo wodospadów: zarówno tych małych, ukrytych gdzieś za górami, jak i tych olbrzymich takich jak Dettifoss, najbogatszy w energię wodospad Europy.

Ring Road Trip

The Icelandic Ring Road is considered  one of the best ring road trips in the world. I had been planning on going for a trip around Iceland for a few years and last week my dream finally came true.
7 days of driving (10, as advised in the article, seem too many for this trip) around the country was truly an amazing experience: I could admire beautiful landscapes such as geysers, glaciers, volcanoes, lava fields, waterfalls, cliffs and get to know the real Iceland with its cute small towns and villages. It’s impossible to describe the whole trip and share my pictures in one post, so I’m going to write several posts about my ring road experience. This one is a generic one, I hope that after reading it you’ll understand why I was so excited about this trip.

Islandzka Droga Numer 1 wiodąca dookoła kraju jest uważana za jedną z najlepszych tras na wyprawę samochodem. Planowałam tę podróż od dobrych kilku lat, a w zeszłym tygodniu udało mi się wreszcie spełnić to marzenie.
7 dni jazdy (10, jak w cytowanym artykule, to moim zdaniem trochę za dużo) dookoła Islandii były wspaniałym przeżyciem: mogłam podziwiać gejzery, lodowce, wulkany, pola lawy, wodospady, klify oraz poznać prawdziwą Islandię i jej małe, urocze miasteczka. Nie sposób opisać całą wyprawę i zamieścić zdjęcia w jednym wpisie, dlatego niebawem napiszę bardziej szczegółowe artykuły, ten natomiast jest ogólnym i dość pobieżnym postem o całej podróży. Mam nadzieję, że uda mi się w nim podzielić wrażeniami i pokazać, że warto udać się w wyprawę dookoła tego pięknego kraju.

Navigating is very easy (there’s basically only one big road in Iceland), but it’s good to plan the trip in order to see all the nice spots without rushing too much.

Trudno się zgubić jadąc dookoła Islandii, bo Ring Road 1 jest jedyną większą drogą. Warto jednak dobrze zaplanować podróż, by móc zobaczyć główne atrakcje nie spiesząc się za bardzo.

Day 1/Dzień Pierwszy

Golden Circle (Þingvellir, geysers, Gullfoss) and relax in the swimming pool in Selfoss (more active people could do the Hot River Hike instead 🙂 )

Golden Circle, czyli Þingvellir, gejzery i Gullfoss oraz relaks na basenie w miejscowości Selfoss (tu alternatywą dla aktywnych może być szlak do gorącej rzeki w Hveragerdi.

Day 2/ Dzień Drugi

South Shore: waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss, Eyjafjallajökull, Seljavallalaug pool, Sólheimajökull glacier, Vik and then driving towards the Skaftafell park by the beautiful lava fields.

Jazda wzdłuż południowego wybrzeża: wodospady Seljalandsfoss i Skógarfos, Eyjafjallajökull, basen Seljavallalaug, lodowiec Sólheimajökull, Vik, a stamtąd udaliśmy się do parku Skaftafell jadąc przez piękne pola lawy.

Day 3/Dzień Trzeci

Hike in Skaftafell, glaciers, Jökulsárlón and fjords in the East.

Road Trip to the Westfjords #2

I started the second day of my trip to the Westfjords in Tálknafjörður and then headed North. The plan was to drive along the fjords up to Ísafjörður and then go back to Reykjavik. I drove more than 600 km and each kilometer was a wonderful experience.

I think that the road trip to the Westfjords was one of my best adventures in Iceland. The Westfjords are so remote that it feels like the end of the world. A beautiful one though.

Drugi dzień w Fiordach Zachodnich zaczęłam w Tálknafjörður, skąd udałam się na północ do Ísafjörður drogą wiodącą wzdłuż fiordów i następnie wróciłam do Reykjaviku. Ponad 600 przejechanych kilometrów, a każdy z nich był wspaniałym doświadczeniem.

Wyprawa do Fiordów Zachodnich była jedną z moich najlepszych przygód na Islandii. Ten region jest tak odległy od wszystkiego, że wydaje się końcem świata. Przepięknym końcem świata.
