4 wonderful places in Iceland you won’t find in tourist guides

Iceland is becoming a more and more popular destination for tourists from all around the world and the most well known places in the country are often crowded. But if you want to explore the real Iceland – an island far from anything, its tiny villages and nature wonders you can still do it.

During my stay in Iceland I had a chance to see many wonderful places, some of them very little known. In this article I’m sharing four interesting places that most probably you won’t find in any tourist guide:

Islandia staje się coraz bardziej popularnym kierunkiem wśród podróżników i turystów z całego świata, dlatego też najbardziej znane miejsca w kraju są często niemal zatłoczone. Ale da się też wciąż nacieszyć prawdziwą Islandią – wyspą na krańcu świata z urokliwymi rybackimi wioskami i cudami natury.

Gdy mieszkałam na Islandii, dotarłam do wielu wspaniałych miejsc, a niektóre z nich są bardzo mało znane. W dzisiejszym poście opiszę cztery takie miejsca, najpewniej nie znajdziecie ich na głównych stronach przewodników po Islandii:

1. Hengill

The volcanic mountain of Hengill, located less than one hour drive from Reykjavik, is a geothermal site and a perfect hiking area (lots of hiking trails!). The views made me think of “the Tolkien landscape”: small rivers in the valleys, dramatic mountains and not a soul in sight. You can read more about the place and see more pictures here.

Hengill to wulkan znajdujący się mniej niż godzinę jazdy samochodem od Reykjaviku. Te wulkaniczne okolice są idealnym miejscem na górskie wędrówki (jest nam mnóstwo przeróżnych szlaków!). Tamtejsze widoki są niczym z powieści Tolkiena: małe rzeki w dolinach, fascynujące góry i ani żywej duszy. Więcej informacji o tym rejonie można znaleźć w tym poście.

2. Hólmavík

I have written many posts about Westfjords and Hólmavík, a small town by Steingrímsfjörður, is a gateway to this part of Iceland. It is also a charming fishing village where you have an impression that time passes more slowly than anywhere else. Beautiful fjord, colourful houses, tiny Scandinavian churches: welcome to one of the most Icelandic places ever!

Niejednokrotnie pisałam o przepięknych Fiordach Zachodnich a Hólmavík, mieścina u wybrzeży fiordu Steingrímsfjörður, leży u progu tego regioni. Jest to urocza rybacka wioska, w której ma się wrażenie, że czas płynie wolniej. Spektakularny fiord, kolorowe domki, typowo skandynawskie kościółki: witajcie w kwintesencji Islandii!

3. Reykjanes geothermal area

Another incredible geothermal area in Iceland. This one is particularily close to Reykjavik (between the city and the Keflavík Airport) and surprisingly not popular amongs tourists. You can have these nature wonders just for yourself! 🙂

Kolejny wulkaniczny region Islandii z właściwymi sobie geotermalnymi zjawiskami. Ten akurat jest wyjątkowo blisko Reykjaviku (znajduje się między stolicą a lotniskiem w Keflavíku) i o dziwo nie jest popularny wśród turystów. Cuda natury tylko dla Ciebie!

4. Flatey

Tiny island in Breiðafjörður – fjord between Snaefellsness and Westfjords, in the summer you can easily get there by ferry. Great place to see beautiful sunsets and live the ocean life.

Flatey, perełka na koniec! Wysepka w Breiðafjörður – fiordzie między półwyspem Snaefellsness i Fiordami Zachodnimi, latem łatwo można tam dotrzeć promem. Wspaniałe miejsce do podziwiania przepięknych zachodów słońca oraz okazja, by zobaczyć jak żyje się w małym miejscu, wokół którego jest tylko woda.

Reykjanes Geopark

After a lot of travelling in different places in Iceland, I’m finally back in Reykjavik. Since I’m going to stay here for another two weeks, I want to discover many interesting places in the capital area. I decided to head to the Reykjanes Geopark as a way of spending a nice evening close to Reykjavik.

The Reykjanes Geopark is just 25 minutes away from where I live. I drove towards Hafnarfjörður and then headed South. I got to a lovely place that looks as if it was in the middle of nowhere – nobody can guess it’s so close to Reykjavik!

Since the Reykjanes Peninsula is a continuation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which rises from the sea at the very tip of the peninsula and diagonally crosses Iceland from the south-west to the north-east, this is a geothermally active area. In the Reykjanes Geopark there are plenty of little hot springs, scroll down if you want to have a look at the pictures I took there.

Po podróżowaniu do wielu miejsc na Islandii, nareszcie jestem z powrotem w Reykjaviku. Będę tutaj przez następne dwa tygodnie, więc chcę zobaczyć i odkryć jak najwięcej ciekawych miejsc w okolicy. W zeszłym tygodniu zdecydowałam się więc spędzić wieczór nieopodal stolicy, Geoparku Reykjanes.

Znajduje się on zaledwie 25 minut jazdy samochodem od miejsca, w którym mieszkam. Trzeba najpierw dotrzeć do Hafnarfjörður, a później skierować się na południe. Dotarłam w ten sposób to cudownego miejsca, które wygląda jak kompletne odludzie – ciężko uwierzyć, że w rzeczywistości jest blisko Reykjaviku!

Ponieważ Półwysep Reykjanes jest kontynuacją Grzbietu Śródatlantyckiego, który wynurza się z morza na jego skraju i ciągnie na skos przez całą Islandię, jest to też obszar geotermalny. W Geoparky Reykjanes jest mnóstwo małych, bulgoczących gorących źródeł. Poniżej kilka zdjęć z tego miejsca.
