Lithuania was the first country visited during the road trip. Of the three Baltic countries, Lithuania is the most folkloric, traditional and the cheapest. Even though it is a small country, there is much to be discovered about it. Let me just mention few instanced of what makes Lithuania unique:
Litwa była pierwszym krajem odwiedzonym podczas samochodowej wyprawy. Mimo że jest to mały kraj, wiele można w nim okryć. Poniżej zaledwie kilka ciekawostek, które czynią Litwę wyjątkową:
– It is Europe’s last pagan nation: it was Christianised at the end of the 14th century. The rich spiritual history is a source of fascination for modern Lithuanians: today, a neo-pagan community – Romuva – attempts to restore Lithuanian paganism.
– Lithuanian is one of the oldest language in the world today. This language is one of the oldest living Indo-European language of Europe and it’s the closest one to the ancient Sanskrit.
– Lithuania was the first Soviet republic to declare independence from the USSR.
– To ostatni pogański naród Europy: Chrystianizacja nastąpiła dopiero pod koniec XIV w. Bogata duchowa tradycja jest źródłem fascynacji współczesnych Litwinów: dzisiaj neopogańska społeczność – Romuva – usiłuje przywrócić litwiński poganizm.
– Język litwiński jest uznawany za najstarszy indoeuropejski jeżyk wciąż w użyciu. Jest on także najbliżej spokrewniony ze starożytnym sanskrytem.
– Litwa była pierwszą sowiecką republiką, która ogłosiła niezależność od Z.S.R.R.
My first stop in Lithuania was its capital, Vilnius. It’s brimming with history and beautiful architecture yet also somehow quirky. The Old Town is one of the largest ancient heritages in Eastern Europe. Its buildings were erected in different centuries and create an impressive ensemble of various styles such as like gothic, renaissance, baroque, classicism and post-modernism.
Wandering through the streets of Vilnius Old Town is definitely the best way to discover the city and feel its atmosphere.
Moim pierwszym przystankiem na Litwie była stolica kraju, Wilno. Jest to miasto przepełnione historią i piękną architekturą, a jednocześnie trochę dziwne. Stare Miasto jest jednym z najstarszych zachowanych w Europie Wschodniej. Znajdują się w nim budynki powstałe w różnych epokach, które dzisiaj tworzą imponującą mieszkankę takich stylów jak gotyk, renesans, barok, klasycyzm czy post-modernizm.
Przechadzka uliczkami wileńskiego Starego Miasta to najlepszy sposób, by odkryć to miasto i poczuć jego atmosferę.
You can admire beautiful panoramic view of Vilnius from the highest building in the Old Town: the campanile of St. John’s Church. I was impressed the city is so green!
Panoramę Wilna najlepiej podziwiać z najwyższego budynku na Starym Mieście: wieży kościoła Św. Jana. Byłam pod wrażeniem, jak bardzo zielona jest stolica Litwy!
An interesting place to see in Vilnius is Užupis. bohemian quarter. Few decades ago it was rather neglected and considered a no go zone but now it’s one of the most charming places in the Lithuanian capital. On April 1, 1997, the district declared itself an independent republic and each year “independence” anniversary is well celebrated (for example you can serve yourself a pint of free beer, right from the tap in one of Užupis’ squares). When entering the Republic of Užupis you have to smile, you cannot drive too fast and you have to acknowledge the place belongs to artists.
Ciekawym i wartym odwiedzenia miejscem w Wilnie jest Zarzecze (Užupis), czyli artystyczna dzielnica, która jeszcze niedawno była zaniedbana i uchodziła za szemraną okolicę, a teraz jest jednym z najbardziej urokliwych miejsc litewskiej stolicy. Užupis 1. kwietnia 1997 roku ogłosiło się republiką, a każda rocznica jest hucznie obchodzona (choćby darmowym piwem z kranu na jednym z placów dzielnicy). W Republice Užupis panuje kilka zasad: trzeba się uśmiechać, nie wolno jeździć zbyt szybko samochodem, a całe miejsce należy do artystów.
Another interesting and alternative spot in Vilnius is Literatų Street. Artworks mounted on its walls are dedicated to the literature workers: writers, translators, everyone who has link with Lithuania and is important for Lithuanian or world literature.
Kolejnym ciekawym i alternatywnym miejscem w Wilnie jest Ulica Literatų. Dzieła na jej murach są dedykowane literatom: pisarzom, tłumaczom i innym osobom związanym z Litwą oraz ważnym dla litewskiej i światowej literatury.
When talking about literature I have to mention that all over Vilnius we can find places linked to Adam Mickiewicz, great Polish poet.
Mówiąc o literaturze muszę także wspomnieć, że w wielu miejscach znajdziemy nawiązania do Adama Mickiewicza.
I didn’t manage to visit as much as I would have liked because the weather in Vilnius was really bad but this was a good excuse to head to pubs and bars in the Lithuanian capital 🙂 I really liked the one located literally two minutes from my hostel: Dėvėti. It is a hip bar with friendly staff, great selection of beer, snacks and proper meals (vegan options avaliable).
Nie udało mi się zwiedzić Wilna tak jak planowałam, bo pogoda zupełnie nie dopisała, ale to było z kolei dobrą wymówką, by odkryć tamtejsze bary i puby. Bardzo przypadł mi do gustu lokal położony zaledwie dwie minuty od hostelu, w którym się zatrzymałam Dėvėti. To modne miejsce z miłą obsługą, sporym wyborem piw, przystawek oraz pełnymi posiłkami (także wegańskimi).
Another place visited in Lithuania was Trakai, a town just outside Vilnius, located between the hills, forests and lakes. It is famous for its picturesque landscape, castle and for being the site of Karaimes who have lived there since the 14th century and have preserved their traditions.
Kolejnym miejscem odwiedzonym na Litwie były Troki – miasto nieopodal Wilna, słynące z malowniczego krajobrazu, zamku oraz znane jako siedziba Karaimów, którzy mieszkają tam od XIV w. i zachowali twoją tożsamość kulturową i tradycje.
The area around Trakai is very picturesque. It’s a shame it was raining all the time when I was there, these places must be extremely beautiful when the weather’s nice.
Rejony wokół Troków są bardzo malownicze. Szkoda, że padało cały czas gdy tam byłam, bo te miejsca z pewnością są przepiękne, gdy pogoda dopisuje.
Kaunas – last place visited in Lithuania. Not many know that it was the capital of Lithuania during the interwar period. Today Kaunas is the largest centre of industry and a city centered around culture. I liked it more than Vilnius: Kaunas looks more clean, dynamic and modern than the capital.
Kowno – ostatnie odwiedzone miejsce na Litwie. Mało kto wie, że miasto to było w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym stolicą Litwy. Dzisiaj jest to największy ośrodek przemysłowy kraju oraz ważny ośrodek kulturowy.
