The Westfjords (Vestfirðir) region is considered one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places in Iceland. The Lonely Planet guide book has rated the region as one of the Top 10 places to visit in 2011.
The Westfjords are also Iceland’s most sparsely populated area and the nature there is untouched.
Since I probably won’t get to lead a workcamp there, I decided to go on a road trip: almost 1200 km in two days in order to explore the beautiful Westfjords.
I headed North and after 2-3 hours of driving got to the first fjord.
Be careful with these birds, they really attack people! 🙂
Uwaga na te ptaki, wyglądają niepozornie, a atakują ludzi! 🙂
Finally got to Flókalundur by the Vatnsfjörður fjord.
Ciąg dalszy jazdy i wreszcie dotarłam do Flókalundur nad fiordem Vatnsfjörður.
And then kept on driving in the beautiful mountains.
Jazda poprzez przepiękne góry.
And finally I got to Látrabjarg, the westernmost point in Iceland – and indeed Europe. It is 441 m high and spans 14 km making it the island’s largest coastal cliff. It is also known because of its rich birdlife: the cliffs are home to millions of birds, including puffins. After two months and a half spent in Iceland I managed to see these cute birds!
My last stop during that day was the town of Tálknafjörður where I stayed for the night.
