How to see the Northern Lights?

Getting to see the Northern Lights – one of the most spectacular natural phenomenon – is on many people’s bucket list. It is also amongst things to experience when visiting Iceland. The tricky part (or the beauty 🙂 ) of the Northern Lights is that we can never be certain that we will actually see them.

Many people come to Iceland hoping to see the Northern Lights and as it is impossible to make sure to see them, here are some tips how to increase your chances.

Wiele osób marzy o zobaczeniu zorzy polarnej, jednego z najbardziej spektakularnych zjawisk naturalnych. Sęk (i urok) zorzy tkwi w tym, że nigdy nie możemy być pewni, czy uda się nam ją zobaczyć.

Wiele osób przyjeżdża na Islandię mając nadzieję ujrzeć zorzę i choć nie ma można tego zagwarantować, poniżej kilka wskazówek, jak zwiększyć szanse spełnienia tego marzenia.

What are the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are caused by the interaction of a stream of charged particles escaping the Sun (commonly known as the solar wind) the Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. Their colours are dependent on different gases gettting ionised by charged particles: oxygen release green and red photon and nitrogen purple light – rather rare to see.

Czym właściwie jest zorza polarna? Powstaje ona wskutek interakcji strumienia naładowanych cząstek emitowanych przez Słońce (zwanych wiatrem słonecznym) z ziemskim polem magnetycznym i atmosferą. Kolory zorzy odzwierciedlają różne gazy poddawane jonizacji: zielony i czerwony to tlen, a fioletowy (znacznie rzadszy) to azot.

When can I see the Northern Lights in Iceland?

Obviously guaranteed darkness is the most important factor, so the best season to see the Northern Lights in Iceland is from September to mid-April. If you are lucky, you can also see them at the beginning of May or late August (like me – clic!!). During June and July it’s just to bright to see them in the Land of the Midnight Sun.

Kiedy można zobaczyć zorzę polarną na Islandii? Oczywiście przede wszystkim musi być ciemno, dlatego najlepiej celować między wrześniem a połową kwietnia. Jeśli nam się poszczęści, możemy też zobaczyć zorzę na początku maja czy pod koniec sierpnia (ja miałam to szczęście – klik!)

Where can I see the Northern Lights?

This question has two answers: the obvious one and the tricky one. The first one would be: as far from towns or any other sources of light and, of course, the more up North the better. The tricky one is that the Northern Lights can appear in different places in different time, days… How to trace them? Aurora forecast might be helpful. You can find a really good one here: http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora/ It shows cloudy areas and clear skies as well as the auroral activity: scale 0 to 9. Anything from 3 can be quite promising.
No matter how well we study the aurora forecast, choose the best location and the best time of the year, without a bit (or a lot!) or luck we won’t see any Norther Lights. Who knows, maybe after a couple of hours of staring at the sky when it’s freezing outside, when we already give up and go home, then the lights appear? I have seen the Northern Lights a few times and I can honestly say that they usually appear quite unexpected.

Gdzie zobaczyć zorzę? To pytanie, na które są dwie podstawowe odpowiedzi: banalna i ta trudniejsza, związana z naturą zorzy. Przede wszystkim trzeba być jak najdalej od miast, miasteczek czy jakichkolwiek innych źródeł światła oraz, oczywiście, im bardziej na północ jesteśmy, tym lepiej. Druga kwestia jest dużo bardziej skomplikowana, bowiem zorza pojawia się w różnych miejscach o różnej porze… Czy można jakoś ją śledzić? Na pewno rzut okiem na prognozę zorzy będzie pomocny, ja polecam tę prognozę: http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora Pokazuje ona, które rejony są zachmurzone oraz te, gdzie bezchmurne niebo pozwoli nam wypatrywać zorzy. Poza tym jest też skala intensywności zjawiska: od 0 do 9. Już 3 może zwiastować piękne kolory na niebie, a im bliżej 9, tym będą one mocniejsze.

Oczywiście możemy przygotowywać się, studiować wszelkie prognozy, wybrać najlepsze miejsce i porę, a bez odrobiny szczęścia nie uda się zobaczyć zorzy. Bo kto wie, może wypatrywaliśmy jej przez kilka godzin w mrozie, a ona pojawiła się tuż po tym, gdy poddaliśmy się i wróciliśmy do domu? Kilka razy miałam okazję zobaczyć zorzę i muszę przyznać, że jest to zjawisko, które zazwyczaj pojawia się dość niespodziewanie.

Aurora Borealis Excursions

Many companies offer Northern Lights Excursions. Is it worth taking part in such a trip? I would say it depends on the lengh of your stay in Iceland. If you’re there only for few days, then why not trust the local experts and let them lead you where you are most likely to see the Northern Lights? Usually if you don’t get to see them, you can go the next day for free. Such excursions aren’t cheap, but seeing Aurora Borealis is definitely priceless.
If your stay in Iceland is longer and rather off the beaten track, then I would say that such excursion is not necessary and it kind of kills the magic of the Northern Lights. It is a great to be able to experience them alone or just with a couple of friends far from everywhere, in complete silence. Aurora Borealis excursions are typically a touristy thing, so you should expect many people with cameras in their hands and a lot of noise when finally the Northern Lights show up. Instead of choosing this kind of excursion, check the Aurora forecast and look for the Northern Lights on your own!

Wiele biur turystycznych na Islandii oferuje Aurora Borealis Tour. Czy warto wybrać się na taką wycieczkę? Moim zdaniem zależy to od długości i charakteru pobytu w kraju. Jeśli to krótki wypad, to może faktycznie warto zaufać ekspertom i tubylcom, którzy zaprowadzą nas do miejsca, w którym mamy największe szanse zobaczyć zorzę. Zazwyczaj biura turystyczne reklamują się gwarancją zobaczenia zorzy – jeśli się nie uda, następnego dnia możemy wybrać się na wycieczkę za darmo. Cena Aurora Borealis Tour nie jest niska, ale przecież  oglądanie zorzy polarnej to bezcenne doświadczenie.

Jeśli z kolei planujesz dłuższy pobyt na Islandii, tego typu wycieczka nie jest konieczna, ponieważ częściowo zabija ona magię zjawiska. Wspaniale jest cieszyć się zorzą samemu bądź wśród bliskich nam osób, w ciszy, a nie z grupą turystów, którzy czekają niecierpliwie z aparatami w rękach, a gdy tylko na niebie pojawi się zielona poświata, robi się bardzo głośno (nie każdy umie powstrzymać emocje 🙂 ). W przypadku dłuższego wyjazdu na Islandię zamiast Aurora Borealis Tour, proponuję śledzenie prognozy i samotne szukanie zorzy!

What about seeing the Northen Lights from a plane?

That’s right! If you’re only flying over a place where you could potentially see Aurora, ask for a window seat heading North. That’s what I did when flying from Canada to Iceland and while everyone else was sleeping or watching movies I enjoyed a beautiful spectacle!

Zorzę polarną można zobaczyć także z samolotu – tak, naprawdę! Jeśli kiedykolwiek będziesz lecieć nad miejscem, w którym można zobaczyć zorzę, warto poprosić o miejsce przy oknie po północnej stronie. Zrobiłam to lecąc z Kanady do Islandii i gdy wszyscy dookoła spali lub oglądali filmy na tabletach, ja oglądałam wspaniałe widowisko!

First Northern Lights of the Season

On the 27th of August the Northern Lights appeared for the first time in the South of Iceland. They were quite strong so I could admire the sky getting green and purple.

The photos aren’t very good, but hopefully I’ll have plenty of occasions to practice taking pictures of this natural phenomenon.

27 sierpnia na południu Islandii po raz pierwszy w tym sezonie ukazała się zorza polarna. Niebo pokryło się zieloną i fioletową poświatą.

Zdjęcia niestety nie są najlepsze, ale mam nadzieję, że będę mieć jeszcze sporo okazji by poćwiczyć robienie zdjęć zorzy.
